Strabane Farmers Projects

On Wednesday 25th June 2003 in the Fir Trees Hotel Strabane, funding body representatives, members of local agricultural groups and officials from several sectors of Department of Agriculture and Rural Development gathered together for the launch of two new agricultural programmes, totaling £140,000.

These programmes are to be delivered over a two year period under the banner of Strabane Farmers’ Forum.

The forum was established during 2002 following a need for such a group’s establishment being highlighted through Derry and Raphoe Action Group. The funding awarded to the forum has been allocated from Strabane Local Strategy Partnership and was the result of successful lobbying on behalf of the needs of farmers and their families within the district council area by the hard-working representatives of the forum.

The forum is made up of seven active agricultural groups within the Strabane District Council area and they are;

Ballylaw Farmers
(a group of about 80 farmers based in the Donemana/ Artigarvan area)
Mary Gray Farmers (a group of 40 farmers based in the Newtownstewart area)
Tyrone Quality Livestock (a cross-community group of commercial beef and lamb producers)
North Tyrone Group of the Ulster Farmers Union (with a group office based in Strabane servicing approximately 500 farmers in the Strabane district)
Derg Valley Young Farmers Club (a young farmers club covering the Castlederg district)
Newtownstewart Young Farmers Club (a young farmers club covering the Newtownstewart area)
Strabane and District Young Farmers Club (a young farmers club covering the Strabane and Victoria Bridge areas)
