Initiatives to date

Outreach Survey

attitudinal survey to identify a representative sample of the issues and views impacting on rural residents within NI, particularly those groupings perceived as disadvantaged within this rural catchment area. The empowerment of local communities in the research process is also seen as vital to its management and ownership. [funding of £9.5K was secured from the RDC]

Local Energy Project

feasibility study on 'Local and Community Ownership of Wind Energy Project Projects' in partnership with Donegal Energy Action Team (DEAT). [funding of £1.7k was secured from INTERREG]
Information Technology Project besides the more traditional ways of sharing knowledge, the Network has developed an exciting new project, which links member groups through e-mail. The project has allowed the Network to link 25 of its member groups and provide them with the resource of a full computer system. In addition, the members have their own web page on the Network web site. The Network won the web site category of NICVA Scope Communication Awards in 2000 [£74K of funding was secured from NLCB & 4 Councils]
Library Resource the Network has built up an extensive library of literature materials and equipment that can be used by member groups, e.g. exhibition boards, data project, laptop, lectern, binder and laminator, etc.[£6.6k of funding was secured from NAL & 3 District Partnerships]
Networking Visits over the last three years the Network has organised networking visits to South of Ireland and other European countries including France, Finland and Sweden. The visits not only provided the delegates with opportunity to gain experience and knowledge from other regions, but also facilitated the development of relationships within NACN. [funding of £7.8k was secured from NAL and NIVT]
NACN Conferences and Directory the Network is a vehicle to enable groups to plan their own learning events geared to their own needs. In the spring of 1998,1999 and 2000 the Network organised three conferences. Each of which provided a forum for local communities to address issues on a regional basis with the involvement of statutory agencies. In addition the Network produced a comprehensive directory of local groups in the areas and useful contacts for relevant statutory agencies. [funding of £20.5k has been secured from NAL]
Causeway Commissioning the Network is one of six organisations who have joined in partnership to establish the project. The specific aim is to develop a partnership between Project the NHSSB and local community networks and groups which will promote an understanding of community needs and of the decision making processes within Health and Social Services and offer local groups an opportunity to influence decisions so that they meet local needs. [funding of £120k was secured from NHSSB]
Antrim Glens Cottages click here for more info the Network was involved in initiating this project which involved the refurbishment of nine derelict cottages for self-catering accommodation. The Network continues to manage this community business which has been operational since 1995. [£290k was secured from IFI, Leader I and DANI; £2,900 was secured from NARA]
North Antrim Leader the Network has been a leading force in setting up a Local Action Group (LAG) for North Antrim in response to the EU Leader II Programme. North Antrim Leader represents a partnership between the Network, Ballymena, Larne and Moyle Council and is distributing a funding package of £800,000.
North Antrim Rural Action

the Network is the local host organisation for the North Antrim Area Based Strategy (NARA) and represents the community sector at Board level. This strategy distributes funding to the most disadvantaged areas in North Antrim and has a total funding budget of one million pounds.

North Antrim Community Transport Consortium the Network is one of the leading partners involved in a transport consortium which aims to provide affordable transport to rural communities within North Antrim. The service will be provided through a dedicated community transport scheme, which will provide transport by means of mini buses, shared vehicles and mopeds. [£250k of funding has been secured from - DoE, NARA and MDP]
Development Officers Forum A Development Officers Forum has been established to provide support, guidance, training, etc. for the growing number of Officers. In addition the Managers are also given guidance and support. [funding of £3k has been secured from NAL]
Community Facilitators Programme

A programme designed for local women to provide a facilitation role to assist in the development of local groups. The programme is delivered by the Women's Resource & Development Agency in partnership with Community Change and is hosted by North Antrim Community Network.

Learning Regions The programme is designed to establish tools and techniques which increase the capacity for social inclusion, equity and sustainable development in a development region. It will do so through helping to establish an 'active framework' or model of communication (a learning region) which intelligently links together different development players and beneficiaries toward the ongoing, collaborative management of rural resources. [£15k has been secured from RDC]

The Network has developed further links with its European community Links partners in Finland and Sweden by developing web pages to allow ease of communication and networking across the three countries. [£3.6K was secured from NAL]
